Members of Auburn’s Striped Water Poetry group lead a romantic writing workshop.  Participants will walk away with the skills to write their own verses of love, just in time for Valentine’s Day.  Program fee of $5 per person includes museum admission.  Pre-registration required.

Fundamentals of Drawing from Life Class

Classes will take place Thursday evenings, from 6:30-9:30. Fundamentals of Drawing from Life is suited for absolute beginners to intermediate artists, and ideal for teenagers. A step by step process of drawing people from life with a focus on portraiture (in graphite or charcoal). Building from basic fundamental principals with the end goal to accurately render whoever is in front of you. Classes will feature a variety of drawing exercises using casts and live models. Sign up for the next Little Explorers Club session at the Kent Historical Museum (meeting at 10:30 AM the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month). Pre-registration is required for the program, aimed at ages 3-Kindergarten. Provides foundational social studies/history learning through stories, activities, and games. Quarterly fee $10. Writing groups for teens and adults to share ideas, critiques, and writing resources:

  • Teen writers ages 12-18 meet at the Auburn Library the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, 3:30-5 PM.
  • For adults, the Valley View Writers Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7 PM at the Valley View Library.

KCLS also sponsors Manga and Anime Clubs for grades 6-12 at the following locations:

Oil bar class

Maple Valley Creative Arts Center
Five week class series, beginning 1/2/2012

Class time will be devoted primarily to making art. Oil bars can be used on paper, stretched canvas, media board, Masonite, and other surfaces. The medium can be applied by itself, with a brush, or it can also be applied with a knife, and moved with solvent and a painting cloth/rag. Instruction will explore different possibilities. This class will be dedicated to the medium and will rely on artists to supply their own subject interests. This is a very exciting medium that is flexible for studio or plein-air painting. There will be brief presentations to explore creative techniques at each session.  Classes are held on Monday, 6-9 PM.

Pacific Ballroom Dance

Building Youth through Ballroom Dance. Located in Auburn, Pacific Ballroom Dance offers classes and teams for youth ages 11-18. Classes are held Monday-Saturday at various times. There is a place for dancers of all skill levels. We offer opportunities in technique/syllabus instruction as well as the unique formation team experience. Precious metal clay jewelry class, level 1 – Moshier Community Art Center

Jewelry classes for adults. Experience working with precious metal clay in this 4 hour workshop. PMC3 is a fine silver powder with clay like consistency that can be rolled, pressed and stamped and then fired to become beautiful solid silver. Students will create 3 to 4 pendants to take home at the end of the workshop. All supplies provided. Cutoff date for registration is January 23.

Publishing workshop – PAWA

The Plateau Area Writers Association is presenting a three-part Publishing Workshop in January.  It will be led by Paul Jackson, a retired Special Librarian in academic, public, corporate, and prison libraries.  The sessions will be held  from 7-9 PM on January 17, 24, and 31 at the Arts Alive! Rainier Symphony

Many of the musicians in the Symphony teach privately and we are happy to provide referrals. Also, Music Director David Waltman is available by appointment for workshops. Specializations include coaching ensembles of any combination of orchestral instruments, with expertise particularly in late classical period through 20th century (Beethoven to the present). Maestro Waltman prefers working with quartets through large ensembles.

Spring DownStage Center classes

The Hi-Liners
2/28 through June

Registration is now open for Spring DownStage Center Classes: Imagination Station (ages 5-8), Improvisation (ages 9 and up), and Glee (ages 11and up). A full production experience, complete with costumes, lighting, and a stage performance at the June recital, but class is still only once a week! Classes begin February 28th at the Burien Annex. Watercolor Class II

Gary’s approach is focused on the creativity and thoughtful expressions produced by students. Gary will teach a different watercolor techniques each week, but will do that in combination with some specific thoughts about the subject matter. Gary will provide evaluation and will encourage students to be able to evaluate their own work and discuss the work of others.
