National Poetry Month highlights poetry’s vibrant and important role in our lives. To celebrate poetry and National Poetry Month, Auburn’s Poet Laureate James Rodgers is hosting a poetry contest (with a little help from his friends)!

Contest winners and awards will be announced at a National Poetry Month Poetry Night at Zola’s Café in Auburn on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Who is eligible: Anyone! This is an all-ages contest and is not restricted to Auburn residents. We do ask entrants to please be available to attend poetry night.

Contest rules:

  • The Auburn National Poetry Month Poetry Contest is open to all ages.

  • All entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. PST on April 3, 2023.
    -Entries will not be returned
    -Confirmation of entry receipt cannot be guaranteed
    -No alterations or changes can be made to poems once submitted.

  • Any poem submitted must, in its entirety, be an original work by the person entering the contest. Poems created with AI assistance are not permitted.

    All submitted poems:
    -Must be written in English.
    -Can be written in any poetic style and on any subject.*
    -must be at least 3 but cannot exceed 40 lines (including stanza breaks, do not double-space). The poem title does not count as a line.
    -must not have been published, self-published, published on a website or made public on social media, or featured among the winners in another competition before April 1, 2023.

The Auburn National Poetry Month Poetry Contest organizers reserve the right to change the judging panel without notice and not to award prizes if, in the judges’ opinion, such action is warranted. The judges decision is final and neither the judges nor contest organizers will enter into any correspondence regarding the contest results.

Entrants give the Auburn National Poetry Month Poetry Contest organizers the right in perpetuity to publish and/or broadcast their poem. The author retains the copyright of any submitted poem.

*Poetry containing vulgar or offensive language, following mature themes, or sensitive topics are acceptable, Submissions containing hate speech, that encourages or threatens violence, or include indecently expressive content will not be accepted and will result in the serious judgment of the entrant by the contest organizers.

The City of Auburn is not affiliated with the Auburn National Poetry Month Poetry Contest.

Deadline: April 3, 2023, 11:59 PM. But here’s a special inducement to enter early: all poems submitted by World Poetry Day, March 21, will be entered into a raffle – winner(s) to be announced at April’s poetry night.
