Des Moines Arts Commission
The City of Des Moines and the Des Moines Arts Commission are seeking artists to create imagery for utility boxes located in various locations around the City of Des Moines. This opportunity is open to visual artists, residing our region, working in any medium, as long as the final artwork can be translated and digitally reproduced on a 2-dimensional vinyl wrap.
This program will provide professional artists with the ability to enhance the community with art and provide the community with vibrant artwork throughout the City and assist in reducing vandalism and graffiti on utility boxes that are often targeted.
The City of Des Moines is looking for up to five artists to create a single artwork design that will be wrapped on up to four utility boxes at one location. Artists will be paid $500 for an approved final design and licensing rights. The City of Des Moines will be responsible for fabrication and installations of the final product. New work is not required to apply for this call. The Des Moines Arts Commission strongly encourages women, people of color, LGBT individuals, people with disabilities, members of ethnic minorities, foreign-born residents, and veterans to apply.
Artwork Submission Criteria:
The design will be in the style and medium best determined by the artist but must integrate the front, back, sides, and top of each box to capture the interest of those that drive, ride, and walk by the utility box.
Artwork must be fully original, completed illustrations, designed to specifically fit the template dimensions.
Artists may submit up to three digital design renderings for consideration. Submission must be .jpg files, no larger than 1MB.
Submit each work with title and brief description of the piece (4-6 sentences).
The selection committee will evaluate and choose from the artwork submitted. Original work can be created in any medium but must be submitted as a digital file for consideration.
Staff will coordinate with an external, third-party vendor to have the digital design transferred to vinyl and installed on the utility box.
Artists will provide final work in approved digital format and file size as required by the fabrication company. Work must be one single image that will cover four sides of the box.

Designs must be appropriate for display in public spaces and viewing by a general audience.
Designs must not contain any representation of traffic lights, signs, or signals.
Designs should not aim to blend into or mimic the surrounding streetscape.
Designs should limit blank space.
Designs should not include landmarks from outside this region.
Designs cannot include vulgar, profane, prejudice, offensive, or insensitive content.
Designs cannot include political or religious content; any breach of intellectual property; trademarks; images of illegal activity; advertisements; logos; signage; promotion of any business, organization, individual, or product; or involve the attachment of objects to the boxes.
All designs will be subject to review and approval by City of Des Moines Arts Commission and City Administration.

The Des Moines Arts Commission is a volunteer-based commission of community members located in the City of Des Moines, WA. We are dedicated to establishing Des Moines as a center for the arts. Our goal is to connect the community to art events and opportunities that will further enrich their lives and improve diversity and access to the city through the arts.
We want Des Moines to be recognized for its advancement of vibrant arts and culture.
Preferred File Formats & Size for Final Work:
Final artwork should be no less than 150 DPI in the native file your artwork was created from (.AI, .INDD, .PSD) and/or a Print-Ready PDF.
If your artwork is selected, you will be provided a digital template by the vinyl company for final layout. All files will be discussed with the individual artists as the power boxes may vary.
