Copper Canyon’s open reading period is open to poets and translators at every stage of their career, whether living in the United States or abroad. Past and current employees/interns of Copper Canyon Press are not eligible to submit to open reading periods and previously self-published books are not eligible for submission. Returning Copper Canyon poets are encouraged to reach out to their Editor directly. If there are any questions regarding your eligibility, please email poetry@coppercanyonpress.org with the subject line “Open Reading Period Eligibility Inquiry.”
Copper Canyon Press holds multiple reading periods throughout the year, each capped at 375 submissions. The next upcoming reading periods will take place Friday, September 15 through Sunday, October 15.
If 375 submissions are received before October 15, 2023, the first open reading period will close and an announcement will be made via Copper Canyon’s website and social media.For this reason, we recommend submitting your manuscript sample as early as possible within any given reading period.
You are encouraged you to take any time needed for revisions and fine tuning and to submit to the open reading period that best suits your timeline.
Submissions are invited through Submittable – Copper Canyon staff does not have capacity to read or respond to unsolicited manuscripts that are submitted by email or mail. However, if you need accommodations to make the submission process accessible to you, please contact poetry@coppercanyonpress.org with your request. Please write “Submission Accessibility Request” in the subject line.
Copper Canyon Press exclusively focuses on poetry and poetry-related texts. They are interested in reading samples from:
- Poetry collections, including works in translation
- Prose manuscripts with a focus on poetry
- Manuscripts in hybrid genres that will delight a poetry-reading audience
