Summer Splendor – Gateway Concert Band
August 12 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pmThere is no admission charge, but a $10 donation per patron is recommended.
The program begins with an alternatively exciting and pensive overture entitled “Brule River Celebration”. Next, assistant conductor directs the band in the triumphant “Fanfaronade”. The perennial favorite march, “The Billboard”, precedes Henry Mancini’s “Pennywhistle Jig”, featuring the aforementioned Stephanie Magnusson on piccolo. The number 5 is central to a fun and inventive piece in 5/4 time and written using just 5 notes entitled “Fivefold”. Selections from the 2017 American musical biographical drama film, “The Greatest Showman”, are sure to thrill. A wonderful Paso Doblé (Spanish Two-Step), “La Roquina”, leads to an overture which honors school music teachers titled “Prevail!” Percy Grainger’s engaging setting of an English folksong, “I’m Seventeen Come Sunday”, is followed by Karl King’s popular march, “Royal Scotch Highlanders”. The program concludes with Mark Williams’ expertly-written overture, “Hawkeye Festival Overture.”
The concert will feature Gateway Concert Band assistant conductor Stephanie Magnusson, playing piccolo with the band.
