What’s in the News – White River Valley Museum

February 26 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

Racist language, journalism and what we can learn from problematic historic accounts.

The early Black residents of the White River Valley met the same obstacles as those in other rural areas. What do we know about them? What stories were being told and how were they depicted in news outlets? Join us for a conversation about historic media with our Curator of Collections, Hilary Pittenger and Auburn’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager, Brenda Goodson-Moore. We’ll take a deep dive into what would now be a VERY CONTROVERSIAL news article from the 1945 Auburn Globe-News to discuss racist language, journalism, and what we can learn from problematic historic accounts.
Register: email arust@auburnwa.gov to receive a Zoom link for the program. Registration cut off will be at noon on the day of the program.
