Former zoo curator John Bierlein traces the history of Woodland Park Zoo from its beginnings nearly 120 years ago as a private estate, carved from the wilderness to promote real estate development in the Phinney Ridge and Green Lake neighborhoods of Seattle, to the late 1970s, when the zoo emerged as an international pioneer in naturalistic exhibit design and landscape immersion.
