The Renton Historical Society, a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit, is seeking a qualified candidate for the part-time position of Public Engagement Coordinator for the Renton History Museum, Renton’s only museum. Under the direction of the Museum Director, the Public Engagement Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of the museum’s interpretive and educational experience for our diverse visitors. The duties of this position fall under two categories:
• Plan, implement, market, and deliver interpretive and educational programs for the public.
• Develop program content that supports the Museum’s mission and exhibits.
• Assist in resource development for all programs and events.
• Develop, coordinate, and administer guided tours for groups of visitors of all ages.
• Plan and execute outreach into the community to raise awareness of the Museum’s offerings.
• Design, write, implement, and analyze surveys and other evaluative tools.
• Act as lead and primary liaison between unpaid and paid staff.
• Recruit and train volunteers for a variety of unpaid roles.
• Meet regularly with the Museum’s Volunteer Committee.
• Manage and oversee the Museum’s Youth Advisory Council, the RenTeens.
• Schedule volunteers to staff the Museum on Saturdays and docents to lead tours for the public.
• Formulate and implement volunteer enrichment and appreciation activities.
Responsibilities include working with staff to enhance museum initiatives with appropriate programs that engage the public, as well as other duties as assigned. Hours are somewhat flexible; evening and weekend work will be required.
The ideal candidate will:
• Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Museology, Volunteer Managment, Art, Public History, or related field. Preference will be given for Master’s degree in Museology.
• Have prior work experience in public programming and working with volunteers.
• Have experience in organizing and implementing programs for children, youth, and/or adults.
• Demonstrate knowledge and experience in history, museums, public presentations, and education.
• Have the ability to communicate clearly in writing, verbally, and through public presentations.
• Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, working enthusiastically and tactfully with diverse volunteers of all ages in a museum / public setting.
• Exhibit excellent organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize, multi-task, meet schedules and deadlines, and follow through.
• Be willing to go the extra mile to support the team in a small museum setting.
• Be passionate and motivated, and willing to take initiative.
• Be proficient in Windows-based applications, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook. Familiarity with Adobe InDesign.
• Have the ability to design, write, implement, and analyze surveys and other evaluative tools.
• Be available for evening and weekend hours.
• Hold a valid WA state drivers license.
Work Environment / Physical Demands
Work is generally conducted in an office environment using a desktop computer, but regular travel to meetings and other gatherings is required. Weekend and evening work will be required. Considerable walking and standing, and some lifting and carrying are required at times.
