South Sound Symphonic Band

The South Sound Symphonic Band (SSSB), formerly known as the Federal Way Symphonic Band, was founded in 1982. Under the long-time direction of Tom Anderson–and now Paul Bain–the group continues to provide quality concerts, festival performances, and special appearances in the community, often times featuring guest soloists. South Sound Symphonic Band provides high quality performances of concert band music as well as promoting band music awareness and music education activities in the South Puget Sound region.

The South Sound Symphonic Band, a 60+ member group of amateur musicians from the South Sound area, is currently accepting letters of interest for a new band director. The band rehearses on Thursday evenings, October through May, at Edgemont Jr. High in Puyallup. The current concert schedule is four formal concerts in November, December, March and May.

The Director is responsible for all rehearsal and performances of the band. He/she selects the musical literature to be rehearsed and performed by the band. The SSSB Board of Directors assists in the scheduling of the concerts, provides input in the program selection and communicates with the band. The Director is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors and is expected to attend board meetings to provide input into the musical direction and administration of the band. The position includes an annual stipend.

Qualifications/Skills

  • Prior conducting experience and knowledge of band literature.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities through conducting, teaching and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with adult musicians of varied skill and commitment levels.
  • Excellent music preparation, organizational skills and concert programming experience.

Selection Process – DUE September 5, 2018 Interested directors should submit a letter of interest by September 5. Prospective conductors will be invited to work with the band during the fall season.
