Humanities Washington and the Washington State Arts Commission
The next poet laureate will serve the state from 2023-2025, connecting Washingtonians to the power of poetry. The Washington State Poet Laureate builds awareness and appreciation of poetry through public readings, workshops, lectures, and presentations. Laureates perform this work in culturally and geographically diverse communities throughout the state. Past Laureates report that they grew in unique and significant ways as artists, advanced their careers, and appreciated the opportunity to meet new people and learn about the entire state. Self-nominations are accepted and encouraged.
To be eligible for the Washington State Poet Laureate, a nominee must have significantly contributed to the poetic legacy of Washington State, show demonstrable commitment to serving as an ambassador for poetry to audiences throughout Washington State, be a current Washington State resident and reside primarily in Washington State, and not be a previous Washington State Poet Laureate. Self-nominations are accepted and encouraged.
The honorarium is $40,000 per year for the 2-year term, plus travel expenses.
The Washington State Poet Laureate program is jointly sponsored by Humanities Washington and the Washington State Arts Commission (ArtsWA).
