Interlochen Arts Academy
Application deadline: 12/1/2018
Interlochen Arts Academy has announced the return of the Virginia B. Ball Creative Writing Scholarship, a biennial award for high school-aged creative writing students. Through generous grants from the Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Foundation, Interlochen is excited to be able to offer a full-tuition scholarship to the winner for the 2019-2020 school year, with the scholarship being renewable for each year the winner attends the prestigious fine arts school.
“The Virginia B. Ball scholarship is exciting for a variety of reasons,” says Mika Perrine, Interim Director of Creative Writing. “It allows a talented young writer the opportunity to be a part of Interlochen and to take their writing talents to the next level. We are thrilled to be able to offer a full creative writing tuition scholarship to its winner this year. The Ball Foundation’s generosity allows us to invest in the development of talented young writers, and makes an Interlochen education more accessible to a greater number of people.”
The contest is open to all students in grades 8-11 during the 2018-2019 school year. Applicants are asked to submit writing samples by December 1, 2018 in at least two of the following genres: fiction, poetry, personal essay or memoir, screenwriting, playwriting and hybrid genre. The winner will be selected based on the overall strength of their portfolio.
A competition that began in 2001, the Virginia B. Ball Creative Writing Competition Scholarship has made it possible for young writers of great promise to study creative writing at Interlochen. In turn, the creative writing program itself has helped hundreds of young writers find their unique voice and expand their understanding of the craft of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting.
Interlochen’s one-of-a-kind creative writing program provides expert instruction and guidance to high school-age writers. Students benefit from small class sizes and a faculty of published writers who are also experienced and dedicated teachers. Students are closely mentored and afforded venues to read their work in public, as well as publish it in national magazines.
